Most business owners think about their website in terms of human visitors: does it look good, does it load fast, does it convert. That framework is still relevant. But there is now a second audience visiting your site every day: AI bots that are reading your pages, forming opinions about your business, and deciding whether to recommend you to real customers. All before any human clicks.

The Two Types of AI Bot Visiting Your Site Right Now
Not all AI bots are created equal. There are two types that matter:
Indexing bots crawl your site and build a long-term model of what you do. GPTBot (OpenAI), Google-Extended, ClaudeBot (Anthropic): these visit periodically and store a representation of your content for future use in training data and AI knowledge bases.
Retrieval bots are different. These visit your website in real-time, triggered by a specific user query. When someone asks ChatGPT "who are the best digital marketing agencies in Singapore," ChatGPT's retrieval bot may visit your website right now, read your homepage and services page, and synthesise an answer based on what it finds. Within seconds, a potential client either hears about you or does not.
This is the new search. Not a ranked list of ten blue links. An interpreted answer, shaped by what AI can or cannot read on your site.
More than 50% of all web traffic is now from bots, according to Scrunch's February 2026 analysis. The share from AI retrieval bots specifically is growing fast. If your site has content that AI cannot parse, you are invisible to a large and growing chunk of discovery traffic. Not because you lack authority. Because of how your website is built.
What Most SME Websites Get Wrong (For AI, Not Humans)
Here is the uncomfortable part. Many of the design choices that make websites look great to humans make them difficult or impossible for AI to read.
JavaScript-heavy sites and SPAs: React, Next.js, Vue, Angular: these frameworks build pages dynamically, loading content via JavaScript after the initial page load. Humans see a beautiful, fast site. AI retrieval bots often see a blank shell. The bot requests the page, gets back an empty HTML file with a <div id="root">, and has nothing useful to extract. Your services, your credentials, your testimonials: all invisible.
This is increasingly common among SMEs that have invested in modern website redesigns. The aesthetic is excellent. The AI discoverability is zero.
Content locked behind interactions: Tabs, accordions, pop-up modals, "read more" toggles. These are UX tools designed for human navigation. AI bots do not click. If your pricing explanation is hidden inside a tab, AI never reads it. If your "about us" section requires scrolling past a parallax animation before it loads, AI may have already moved on.
Images with text in them: Infographics, banners, quote graphics, hero images with taglines embedded in the image file. Humans read them. AI bots see a file called hero-banner.jpg. Nothing else. All that copy is invisible.
Thin heading structure: If your page is essentially one long block of text with minimal H2 and H3 structure, AI has difficulty parsing what you do and which parts matter. Well-structured pages with clear headings give AI a map of your content. Unstructured pages leave AI guessing.
Missing or poor schema markup: Schema tells AI exactly what your business is, what you offer, where you are, and what others have said about you in a structured, machine-readable format. Most SME websites have none. That means AI has to infer all of this from unstructured body copy, and it often gets things wrong.
The "Game of Telephone" Problem
There is a useful way to think about this. AI-driven discovery is a game of telephone.
Your website communicates to an AI bot. The bot forms an interpretation. That interpretation is then used to answer a customer query. The more gaps the AI has to fill in (because content was locked behind JavaScript, hidden in images, or structured poorly), the further the final answer drifts from what you actually wanted to communicate.
Your competitor has a simpler website with static HTML, clear headings, and a well-structured FAQ. AI reads it cleanly and confidently recommends them. You have a better service and a more impressive portfolio, but it is locked inside a React app that the bot cannot parse. You are not in the answer.

Older, simpler WordPress sites with good heading structure often outperform them in AI search, not because they rank better on Google, but because AI can actually read them.
How to Check What AI Sees on Your Site Right Now
This does not require a paid tool. A manual AI gap analysis takes about 20 minutes.
Step 1: Prompt AI with customer questions. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. Ask the questions your customers would ask:
- "Who are the [service type] specialists in [your city]?"
- "What does [your business name] do?"
- "Is [your business name] good for [specific service]?"
Record what comes back. Are you mentioned? Is the description accurate? What are competitors saying that you are not?
Step 2: Check your page as text. Use Chrome DevTools: right click your homepage, select "View Page Source." If what you see is a JavaScript bundle with minimal readable content, that is what AI sees. If your value proposition, services, and about text are clearly readable in raw HTML, you are in better shape.
Step 3: Check your images for text. Review your homepage. Count how many words of useful content are inside image files rather than actual HTML text. Every word in an image is a word AI cannot read.
Step 4: Review your heading structure. Install a free browser extension like "Detailed SEO Extension" and check the heading hierarchy on your key pages. If H2s are generic ("Our Services," "About Us"), they do not help AI understand context. If they are descriptive ("Digital Marketing Services for Singapore SMEs"), they do.
What to Fix, in Order of Impact
Not everything needs fixing today. Prioritise in this order:
1. Ensure key content is in static HTML. If you are on a JavaScript framework, work with your developer to implement server-side rendering (SSR) or static site generation (SSG) for your main landing pages. This is the single highest-impact change.
2. Add an FAQ section to your key pages. FAQs in plain HTML are highly readable by AI and directly answer the type of queries that trigger AI retrieval. Think about the specific questions customers ask before engaging your business. Put them on your services pages.
3. Implement basic schema markup. At minimum: LocalBusiness schema on your homepage, Service schema on service pages, FAQPage schema on FAQ sections. These take a few hours to implement and give AI clear, structured data about your business.
4. Move content out of images. Replace image-embedded text with HTML text wherever possible. Keep images for visual design. Use alt attributes on every image with meaningful descriptions.
5. Improve heading structure. Rewrite vague headings to be descriptive and specific. "SEO Services" becomes "SEO Services That Get Singapore SMEs Found on Google." More specific headings give AI better signals.
6. Consider llms.txt. An emerging standard (still not universally adopted) that lets you provide a structured, AI-readable summary of your website at /llms.txt. Similar to robots.txt in concept. Early adopters are getting a discoverability advantage.
One More Thing: Check What AI Is Already Saying About You
Many business owners will do this exercise and discover that AI is already saying things about their business. Inaccurate things.
If AI retrieval bots have visited your site and formed a muddled picture (because of JavaScript rendering issues, thin content, or missing schema), they may be describing your business incorrectly to potential customers right now. You will not know unless you check.
Run the prompts above. If the description is wrong, the fix is content and structure, not reputation management.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my website need to be completely rebuilt to be visible in AI search? Not necessarily. The highest-impact fixes (adding FAQ content in HTML, improving heading structure, and adding schema markup) can be done without rebuilding your site. A full rebuild is warranted if your current site is a heavy JavaScript SPA with no server-side rendering and minimal static HTML content. Otherwise, targeted improvements often get you most of the way there.
My website ranks well on Google. Does that mean AI can read it? Not automatically. Google's indexing crawl is sophisticated and handles JavaScript rendering better than most AI retrieval bots. A site that ranks well in traditional search may still have content that AI retrieval bots cannot parse in real-time. Traditional SEO rankings and AI search visibility are increasingly separate variables to track.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO? Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are often used interchangeably. The practical distinction: AEO focuses specifically on appearing in direct question-and-answer formats (like featured snippets or AI answer boxes), while GEO is a broader term for optimizing content to be retrieved and cited by generative AI systems. For most SMEs, the optimization techniques overlap significantly.
How quickly will AI search bots see changes I make to my website? Retrieval bots visit on-demand, so some bots may see changes immediately. Indexing bots that build long-term knowledge bases tend to refresh their crawl data over days to weeks, depending on your site's crawl frequency. Changes to static content that is already crawled tend to propagate faster than adding new pages. Schema changes are typically picked up within a few days.
Should I block AI crawlers or let them in? For most SMEs, letting AI crawlers in is the right call. Blocking AI crawlers removes you from AI-generated search results and recommendations.
